Last week I had the chance to interview 2 of the most fascinating people: Here’s part 1 of the article: “We are made of Star Dust, literally!”
The Connectedness of Us with the Universe Part 1 with Astrophysicist Karel Schrijver and Physician Iris Schrijver.
This week I was especially lucky to have interviews with U.S.-based astrophysicist Karel Schrijver and his wife physician Iris Schrijver, the authors of their exciting new book: “Living with the Stars.”
Most of us would be familiar with the saying; ‘we are made of the stars’, but is it actually scientifically true? Are we?
Yes! It turns out we could not exist without the stars, including some of the estimated 100 tons of stellar material that pours into our atmosphere every day!
“Everything we are, and everything on Earth, including our humble gut bacteria, originates from stardust. Material from the universe is used by all living beings on the planet,” says Karel Schrijver, an astrophysicist specialized in the Sun and its impacts on our
society.
“We don’t usually think about it this way, but humans are made out of materials from the primordial cloud that made the Sun and the planets. Everything in our bodies and everything we eat and drink, at the atomic level, is made from Earth stuff that itself once was a mix of dusty clouds thrown into the galaxy by exploding stars.
That is why it is really true that we are made of stardust!” says Iris Schrijver. Adjunct Professor of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
And it’s not just that, stardust from the cosmos continually flows through us, and keeps us directly connected to the universe, sustaining us and rebuilding our bodies over and over again as long as we live!
It is a fascinating synergy that exists between the cosmos and ourselves, and this interconnectedness becomes obvious once we understand some of the links explored in the book.
So it really is true, you are made of stardust!
How easily we forget our magnificent origins!!
